Cezar Peralta Consing
President & CEO, Bank of Philippine Islands
Cezar “Bong” Consing is President and CEO of Bank of the Philippine Islands. BPI is the largest bank in the Philippines by market capitalization.
From 2004 to 2013, Mr. Consing was a Partner with The Rohatyn Group, a New York headquartered investment management company that manages about $3.0 billion in investments in the global emerging markets. He was responsible for the firm’s private equity business in Asia, managed its Hong Kong based operations and was a member of the board of partners of the firm’s management company.
Mr. Consing was an investment banker with J.P. Morgan & Co. from 1985 to 2004, where he was based in Hong Kong and Singapore. From 1999 to 2004 he was President of J.P. Morgan Securities (Asia Pacific) and, as a senior Managing Director, co-headed or headed the firm’s investment banking group in the Asia Pacific region. As an investment banker, Mr. Consing was directly involved in some of the most significant corporate transactions in Asia, including several mergers, privatizations and fund raisings.
Mr. Consing worked for Bank of the Philippine Islands in Manila from 1980 to 1985, where his last position was Assistant Vice President in the corporate banking division.
Mr. Consing was a director of the board and chairman of the executive committee of Premiere Development Bank, a thrift bank in the Philippines in which The Rohatyn Group was a major shareholder.
Mr. Consing is a director of the board of BPI. This represents his third stint as a board director of the bank. Representing J.P. Morgan & Co., which was a significant shareholder of the bank at that time, he served as director of the boards of the bank and its investment banking subsidiary from 1995 to 2000. He subsequently served as an independent director of the board from 2004 to 2007, when he resigned to serve on the board of Premiere Development Bank. He was reelected as a director of the board of BPI in 2010.
From 2004 to 2013, Mr. Consing was an independent director of the boards of CIMB Group Holdings Berhad and CIMB Group Sdn. Berhad. The CIMB Group is the second largest financial institution in Malaysia. He was also an independent director of the board of CIMB Securities International Pte Ltd, the group’s Singapore based securities firm.
Mr. Consing was an independent director of the board of First Gen Corporation, a major Philippine power generation company from 2005 to 2013.
Mr. Consing has been since 2010 an independent director of the board of Jollibee Foods Corporation, the largest Philippine-based fast foods company.
Mr. Consing served as a board director of the Asian Youth Orchestra, which is based in Hong Kong, from 2003 to 2009.
Mr. Consing received an M.A. in Applied Economics from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1980.
Mr. Consing received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics (Accelerated Program), magna cum laude, from De La Salle University, Manila, in 1979. He graduated with the gold medal for excellence in Economics. He also served on the student council, wrote for the university newspaper, was a member of the university debating team and was a sprinter on the varsity track and field team.
Mr. Consing was a lecturer at De La Salle University’s MBA program from 1981 to 1983 and has been a guest lecturer at the Asian Institute of Management’s MBA program.
Mr. Consing, 53 years old, is a Filipino citizen.
