TOPIC: How can ASEAN bounce back: An EU perspective
SYNOPSIS
The COVID-19 global pandemic has had major ramifications for the global trading system, with supply chains disrupted and protectionist sentiments ensuing. For trade-dependent ASEAN, 2020 will prove to be a painful year, with major economies either slowing down or outright contracting.
So how then can ASEAN bounce back from COVID-19? CARI Senior Fellow Paolo R. Vergano will attempt to provide an answer to this conundrum through a trade and institutional perspective, drawing meaningful comparisons with the experiences of the European Union. Among the topics up for discussion will include how ASEAN can foster greater intra-regional trade through policies addressing regulatory transparency and stakeholder engagement, the strengths and weaknesses of drawing lessons from the EU and how they’ve tackled COVID-19, and how ASEAN can strategically meet the expected shifts in global supply chains in a post-COVID world.
